Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q1. What equipment do
I need?
Q2. How do I know the equipment will work?
A1. The Internet is a cross-platform environment that supports the use of either a Macintosh or a PC. You may, however, find that some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) do not support both systems. In that case, you need to find an ISP that supports the hardware you have. (See below for more information on ISPs.)
If you are buying new equipment, the minimum equipment recommended is:
If you already have equipment, you can usually complete classes with hardware having the following minimum specifications:
Using this equipment will be a slower process, but it is possible to take the course.
It is also possible to use a computer lab, library, or commercial site such as a cafe or Kinko's. In any case, it is the student's responsibility to be sure the equipment you will use allows you to complete the required course work.
Q2. How do I know if the equipment will work?
A2.Whether you are using your own or someone else's equipment, you should be able to visit the following web site: http://www.wce.wwu.edu/sample
This site is a simulated class. Enter the conference area and post a comment to see if your system will interface with the WWW system as it is. Also, you can log onto the course web site from the computers in the Computer Labs on the SJCC campus to see if you can visit the site using the computers on our campus.
If you can do both of these things successfully, you will be able to take a cyber course.

Q5.How do you find an Internet Service Provider (ISP)?
A5.We recommend that you find a local Internet Service Provider (ISP). Our experience has shown that a local ISP will give you more support and in a more personal way than a large, national ISP. Also, ask other students to recommend ISPs in your area. Make sure that the ISP interacts with the online course you are interested in taking.
Make certain that the ISP can provide you with a Point-to-Point (PPP) connection.
